How to Re-engineer Your Enterprise Asset Management System for Utmost Success and Profit
There are many models used to describe an EAM system, several of them are shown below. Figures 1 to 7 are examples of enterprise asset management models available to companies to use in designing and developing their EAM system.
How well a model will work for your organisation depends on the nature of the organisation and its situation. It may be necessary to modify elements of a chosen model to better meet the needs of your organisation, but they all have a common problem: they are all designed from a Top-Down perspective. Meaning, Senior Management sets the EAM Policy and then hope the EAM System is somehow designed and implemented to achieve the Policy.
A Top-Down approach has no way to guarantee operational success — top-down EAM system design requires great amounts of guesswork by managers and engineers on what causes what effect between one level and the other. That problem is solved by reversing the design approach to a bottom-up construction. When you go from bottom-to-top there is no guessing because you already know the result that a cause will produce as its effects move up the structure. That’s why the Plant Wellness Way EAM methodology is bottom-up — by starting with an asset’s components it’s a sure way to guarantee world class asset reliability in operation. The good thing is that this makes it very easy and simple to observe whether a company’s EAM model, and the resulting EAM system designed on the model, achieve the aims of organisational success and profitability. You simply look at the organization’s operating history to confirm the presence of world class production success and profits.
