A Great Maintenance Manager Does the Maintenance Manager Training They Need to Master Technical Issues and to Deliver Better Maintenance and Reliability Through Others

Truly great people make our world better for others. Our world needs fewer maintenance and reliability problems.

My name is Haruna and would like to pursue a career in maintenance management. I would be grateful of any assistance that can be given to me in terms of direction and maintenance manager training.

Hello Haruna,

Below is a list of what I think is necessary to learn to become a top decile (top 10%) Maintenance Manager.

  1. Be a Mechanical or Electrical Technician who has repaired and maintained equipment
  2. Engineering Degree
  3. Human Resource Management
  4. Project Management
  5. Risk Analysis and Risk Management
  6. Economic Financial Modelling
  7. Reliability Engineering
  8. Maintenance Management
  9. Life Cycle Asset Management

The list of valuable and most useful maintenance manager training is not meant to be daunting and stifle your desire to build a successful maintenance management career. It is intended to offer guidance in the choice and direction of your education. You do need to know your technical discipline to an engineer’s level of understanding.

Then there are things to learn that you cannot learn in a classroom. Such as leadership (which you learn from practice), assertiveness (learnt from practice), teamwork (learnt from practice), communication skills (to get your ideas and intentions across to other people).

You need to know all of the above yourself so that you are less often fooled by good intentioned people who do not know what they are doing.

My best regards to you,

Mike Sondalini
