Plant and Equipment Wellness EAM Training Course Videos Session 05: Series System Arrangements Explained

A series system arrangement has three series reliability properties that are vital you understand

When the consequence of failure for an item in a series system arrangement is excessive, it becomes practical to install parallel redundancy

Series system arrangements are used everywhere in business processes, and in the design of plant and equipment. The use of series arrangements bring endless risks because they provide limitless opportunities for failure.

A series system has certain properties from which implications of series system behaviour and constraints can be drawn.

Reliability Properties for Parallel Systems
Duration 2:29

When parts are used to make a machine, or machines are used to make processes, they can be grouped either in a series or in a parallel arrangement. The final reliability of a series system is always less than its least reliable component. While the reliability of a parallel arrangement is always higher than that of its most reliable item.

All Our Machines are Parts in Series
Duration 4:34

The parts in our machines form a series system arrangement that work together to make the machine run. The electric motor roller bearing is made of individual components assembled together into a rolling bearing. The bearing is made of a chain parts as shown in the flow diagram. The bearing itself is a part in the motor, the motor is a part in a machine, and the machine is a part in a business. When the series system chain breaks anywhere along its length the business stops.

For the machine to be reliable every part in the machine needs to even more reliable. The machine reliability is directly related to the reliability of each working part.

All Our Work are Activities in Series
Duration 8:44

The slide breaks an imaginary job down into five tasks. The tasks form a sequential process. In a sequential process the overall reliability is the multiplication of the individual steps’ reliability. If the reliability (i.e. the chance of working right) in one step is low, then the entire process’ reliability is low. When maintainers and operators do their work they are completing a series of sequential steps. Any wrongly performed step makes the whole job wrong. This is the main reason why it is important to plan work carefully and fully and train people to do their work precisely – so that the reliability of all tasks is 100% and hence the job outcome is 100%.
